The real price

The exchange rate is only the start

A converted price isn't what you pay. Your card adds a fee. Many countries refund their sales tax to visitors. And the same thing might cost less at home anyway.

Priceglot's price sheet puts all of it on one tag: the conversion, your card's fee, a tax refund estimate and, if you want it, the price at home with links to the retailers.

Japan's tax-free shopping now works as a refund

Shops in Japan now charge the full price, including the 10% consumption tax (8% on food and drink). You get the tax back later. Keep the goods unused and with you, and confirm them at a customs kiosk or with Visit Japan Web before you check in your bags, within 90 days of buying. The shop's refund operator then pays you back, less any fee it charges. If one item on a receipt is missing, the whole receipt is refused. Read the Japan guide.

How it works

Three steps, no typing

Point

Open the app at a shelf, a menu board or a market stall. Every price in view gets a chip in your money, as you move.

Tap

Tap a chip for the price sheet: what it costs on your card, the refund estimate and a reminder to pay in local currency.

Decide

Ask what it costs at home. Priceglot finds the item at retailers in your country and tells you if it's cheaper or dearer here.

Privacy

The camera stays on your phone

Live scan reads price tags on the device, with Apple's Vision framework on iPhone and Google's ML Kit on Android. Exchange rates are stored on your phone, so it works with no signal.

Only two things you start yourself go to our server: home-price compare and receipt scanning. No account needed, no ads, no tracking on this site. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

What is Priceglot?

Priceglot is a price tag converter for your phone. Point the camera at a shelf and every price in view gets a chip above it in your home currency, live, with no tapping. Tap a chip to see what it really costs: the price on your card with your card's fee, an estimate of any tourist tax refund, and, if you want, what the same item sells for at home. It's also an everyday currency converter that works offline.

Is Priceglot free?

Yes, and the free version is the full converter. Live scan, the price sheet with card fees and tax refund estimates, the calculator converter, one trip and one card profile are free, with no ads. A Trip Pass (US$4.99, 14 days) or Lifetime (US$14.99, one payment) adds unlimited home-price compares, unlimited trips with CSV export, receipt scanning and more card profiles. There's no subscription.

How is this different from iPhone Live Text?

Live Text can convert one price after you tap it. Priceglot converts every price tag in view at once, continuously, without a tap, and keeps working offline. It also shows what the price costs on your card, what the tax refund could give back and what the item sells for at home, which a plain conversion can't.

Is the tax refund figure exact?

No, it's an estimate. Priceglot works out the tax inside the price from the country's standard rate and shows what a refund could be, using the share refund operators typically pay where an official source gives one. Operators deduct fees, some goods are taxed at reduced rates, and you only get a refund if customs approves your claim. Each country guide on this site shows the rules, the sources and the date we last checked them.

Should I pay in local currency or my own?

Always the local currency. When a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, its provider sets the exchange rate, and consumer group BEUC measured those rates at roughly 2.6% to 12% worse than the reference rate. Our guide to dynamic currency conversion explains how to spot it.

Does the camera send my images anywhere?

No. Live scan reads price tags on your phone, with Apple's Vision framework on iPhone and Google's ML Kit on Android, and the camera feed never leaves the device. Only two features you start yourself send anything to our server: home-price compare (the tag text and, if you add it, a crop of the photo) and receipt scanning (the receipt photo). The details are in our privacy policy.
