Tax-free shopping

Tax-free shopping and tourist tax refunds, country by country

In many countries the price on the tag includes a sales tax or VAT that visitors can claim back on goods they take home. We track the rules for 34 countries: 24 with a refund, 5 with none, 2 that withdrew theirs, 2 in transition and 1 we couldn't confirm.

Every guide lists its official sources and the date we last checked them. Figures are estimates, not tax advice.

Japan's tax-free shopping now works as a refund

Shops in Japan now charge the full price, including the 10% consumption tax (8% on food and drink). You get the tax back later. Keep the goods unused and with you, and confirm them at a customs kiosk or with Visit Japan Web before you check in your bags, within 90 days of buying. The shop's refund operator then pays you back, less any fee it charges. If one item on a receipt is missing, the whole receipt is refused. Read the Japan guide.

How tourist tax refunds work

The refund is the tax inside the price, less any fee. If a country's rate is 20%, a price that includes tax is 120 parts, and 20 of them are tax: one sixth, about 16.7%. That's the most you could get back. Refund companies keep a share for handling the claim, and goods taxed at a reduced rate carry less tax to begin with.

  1. Show your passport and spend at least the minimum in one shop (or on one receipt, depending on the country).
  2. Keep the goods unused and with you when you leave.
  3. Have the claim validated by customs or at a kiosk before you leave, within the deadline.
  4. Collect the refund from the shop or the refund operator.

The EU rule

Non-EU residents (incl. EU nationals living outside the EU who can prove it) can reclaim VAT on goods taken out of the EU in personal luggage within 3 months of purchase, with the refund document validated by customs at the last EU exit point. Minimum set by each Member State. Retailer or intermediary pays and may deduct a fee.
