How the estimate works
A price that includes tax at rate r% contains r/(100 + r) of tax. At 10%, that's 10/110 of the price, about 9.1%. At 20%, it's one sixth. That's the most a refund could be.
- Check the minimum. Each country sets one, on the price with or without tax, per shop, per receipt or per trip.
- Take off the fee. Where an official source gives the share refund operators typically pay, we use it. Where it doesn't, we say "up to", less fees.
- Convert it. We use the European Central Bank reference rate, then add your card's fee to what you pay.
